Quick as a hummingbird…she darts so eagerly, swiftly, sweetly dipping into the flowers of my heart.

Every home has a story, and they are as vast and varied as the world is wide. But they all start with inspiration, and inspiration starts with our surroundings. That’s what home is. Family. Friends. A sense of place. An amazing view. It is all part of what makes a space a home because your home is where you truly live. As homeowners ourselves we understand that your best life begins with a home that inspires you.

As you’re planning your garden year after year, you’re likely focused on the best annual flowers to add to your yard, best shade perennials for your flower beds, and your favorite types of sunflowers. Besides the bold color and pretty flowers we love in a garden, your plant choices may also bring feathered friends like hummingbirds to your garden. These fascinating pollinators (how do their wings move so fast?!) are not just fun to watch, but they’re also a vital part of our ecosystem, pollinating as they move from flower to flower.

If you’re looking to offer a welcoming home for all the local pollinators, you can start by checking out lists of flowers that attract butterflies and flowers that attract bees. Many of the shrubs and flowers on these lists will bring hummingbirds to your yard as well, just keep in mind that they especially love tubular-shaped flowers like trumpet flower with lots of nectar. (Note: Potted and hanging plants work just as well as those planted in the ground to attract hummingbirds.)

Besides flowers and shrubs like butterfly bush (yes, hummingbirds love it, too!), another way to attract the winged wonders is to add one of the best hummingbird feeders to help make your garden more inviting. Add some of these selections to your yard, and you’ll be bird-watching in no time!

1. Honeysuckle

The honeysuckle vine is ideal for attracting hummingbirds and is easily grown in full sun to partial shade. Consider planting this climber near a wall, fence, or other garden structure.

2. Sunflowers

All pollinators seem to love sunflowers! Hummingbirds in particular flock to them for their numerous and teeny tubular-shaped flowers (that make up the dark center) that are loaded with nectar.

3. Delphinium

Also known as larkspur, delphinium is a vibrant perennial that can grow from 2 to 8 feet tall. This plant is winter hardy to USDA Zones 3 to 7 and not recommended for hot, humid climates. Butterflies and hummingbirds find them irresistible, and you’ll love them as cut flowers, too.

4. Foxglove

Recommended for zones 4 to 8, foxglove is easy to grow and can top out at 5 feet tall. While the tubular flowers are appealing to hummingbirds, keep them away from children and pets as they can be highly poisonous.

5. Pride of Madeira

This drought-tolerant evergreen is recommended for zones 9 to 11. It grows fast—up to 6 feet tall and can spread to 10 feet wide. Hummingbirds and butterflies love the showy flowers.

6. Cardinal Flower

This perennial (recommended for zones 3 to 9) has long tubular flowers difficult for some pollinators to navigate, but not hummingbirds! The flower needs full sun to partial shade and soil that is never dry.

Use shelving along the walls of the garage to store most items. If you’re in need of storage, Blumer recommends shelves that are easy to install and reconfigure as your needs change, such as the Container Store’s Elfa system.

7. Red Hot Poker

This vibrant orange-and-yellow flower will add pizzazz to any garden. The flowers are packed with nectar, which attracts hummingbirds. Recommended for zones 5 to 9, it needs full sun and well-draining soil.

8. Trumpet Flowers

Also known as hummingbird vine, it’s no surprise the birds love this flower. Plant in full sun for best flowering. This easy-to-grow vine does best in zones 4 to 9.

9. Petunias

Chances are this popular, inexpensive flower (a perennial in zones 10 to 11) is growing in your yard already. Choose brightly colored blooms and plant them in a hanging basket to attract hummingbirds.

10. Bleeding Heart

It’s easy to see where this plant got its name. Recommended for zones 3 to 9, this perennial likes partial shade and well-draining soil. The flowers are a rich source of nectar.

11. Zinnia

Zinnia, one of the most popular annuals, is easy to grow from seed and thrives in zones 2 to 11. Hummingbirds and other pollinators love the bright blooms, which also make for great cut flowers.

12. Butterfly Bush

Of course, this easy-to-grow flowering shrub is attractive to butterflies, but hummingbirds love the elongated clusters of blooms, too. Butterfly bush prefers full sun and well drained soil. It works best in zones 5 to 10.
